Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), founded in 1898, is the nation's first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer in Upstate New York. The Molecular and Cellular Biophysics & Biochemistry Program is one of the seven academic programs offered by the Roswell Park division of the University at Buffalo (SUNY) Graduate School. Graduate students in Molecular and Cellular Biophysics & Biochemistry represent a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, including, biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Graduate training is oriented toward enhancing students future employment opportunities. The ability to earn a graduate degree at a major cancer hospital/institution offers unique training opportunities. The programs in the department range from basic to clinical research. Career opportunities for RPCI doctoral students may be found in academic, research, industrial and clinical environments. Research areas include: Cellular and oxidative stress, Molecular biology and immunology of cellular stress proteins, Development of cancer vaccines, Molecular mechanisms in carcinogenesis, DNA damage and repair, Molecular structure and drug design, Membrane biophysics, Drug delivery, Metabonomics, proteomics, and glycomics, In vivo imaging, Photodynamic therapy and photobiology, Magnetic resonance imaging, and Radiation biology and medical physics.
