English education is concerned with the teaching of literature and composition in secondary schools and colleges and universities. Programs take a broad humanistic approach and emphasize research and practice in language, writing, and response to literature. Students study theory, research, and practice. Certification titles include: Initial Certification (Certificate of Advanced Study; Grades 7 - 12): This program will prepare students for New York State Initial Certification. Initial/Professional (Initial Certification combined with a Master’s degree; Grades 5 - 12): This includes preparation for Initial Certification, and a Master’s degree. Professional (Master’s degree; Grades 7 - 12 or Grades 5 - 12): This degree in combination with other New York State requirements will help teachers obtain professional certification.
