English education is concerned with the teaching of literature and composition in secondary schools and colleges and universities. Programs take a broad humanistic approach and emphasize research and practice in language, writing, and response to literature. Doctoral programs in English education may include courses in such areas as linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and women's studies, in addition to courses in the department and GSE. Graduates of LAI's doctoral programs are prepared for research, teaching, and administrative posts in colleges and universities and for positions of educational leadership in the schools or in state education departments.
